At the age of thirty-three, Sean O'Neill was made a Worldwide Creative Director for Ogilvy & Mather in London. He worked primarily in the EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa). His background was in both copywriting and art direction, but he also has worked as an account director. In 1997 he founded his own marketing consultancy in Soho in London, Sure Customer Marketing, working for clients such as The American Express Company, Swisscom, Canon UK, Canon Europa, Barclays.
Accountable philosophy Having cut his teeth in above-the-line advertising, Sean became attracted to direct marketing because of its accountability in delivering rational business results, requiring a unique blend of art and science. Working alongside David Ogilvy himself in Paris, he was converted to direct marketing as a 'secret weapon' in any marketing programme. By the early 1990's, he started thinking that ALL advertising should be direct advertising, because it can be measured precisely and can be modified for greater success based on testing and the immediate feedback it provides.
Product development In the late 1990's Sean began developing products for clients, based on the identification of gaps in the marketplace and the core competencies of partners. In this capacity he has created a number of new credit cards, named and launched a Chilean wine, created numerous musical CDs., and been involved in bringing direct marketing tracking & accountability to dozens of websites, including amazon.com.
A passion for teaching Sean has always loved teaching and has authored and delivered several bespoke training courses for international blue chip direct marketers such as The American Express Company, giving workshops in diverse locations such as London, New York, Athens and Istanbul. It is a continuing passion. He is currently working on a book about direct.
